We stand in unwavering support of the Australian Jewish community following the horrific antisemitic terror attack on peaceful Hanukkah celebrations in Bondi. Our deepest sympathy and love goes out to the bereaved families, the victims, first responders, and all those impacted in the Jewish and wider Bondi community.

We share your grief and we will always stand by you.

Antisemitism (anti-Jewish racism) should have no place in Australia. We should all feel and be safe in our identities – free to practice our faiths, live our cultures, celebrate with family, and be in community with one another. Everyone has a right to live in peace and safety, no matter their belief or background.

In the aftermath of this shocking violence, we remember our shared humanity. We honour the memories of those killed. We celebrate the unity, courage, and care being shown by millions of people across Australia as we mourn together.

We have seen what happens when a community is singled out and scapegoated based on their identity, ethnicity, race or religion; and we reject efforts to create further division through fear, polarisation, and disinformation.

We come together and echo the words of the NSW Faith Affairs Council that “We will not let hatred and violence divide us. Across all our cultures and faiths, we will stand united in sympathy, compassion and solidarity.“

We are resolute in our collective commitment to defend everyone’s rights to safety, culture and faith, and to build a peaceful society.

We commit to deepening our understanding of how anti-Jewish racism arises, in order to better identify and prevent it from being committed against the Australian Jewish community ever again.

We stand with the Australian Jewish community, in love and solidarity.

The Australian Muslim Advocacy Network (AMAN) has joined leading global civil rights and faith-based organisations in urging the Norwegian Nobel Committee to withdraw its 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan politician Maria Corina Machado.

The call comes amid growing concern over Ms Machado’s public support for far-right movements, anti-Muslim extremism, and military intervention in Venezuela.

A Call for Moral Integrity

In a joint letter sent to the Nobel Committee in Oslo, the signatories expressed deep concern over the decision. They stated that the Nobel Peace Prize should honour individuals who defend justice and peace for all, not those who promote war, racism, or fascism.

Reasons for Concern

The letter outlined several issues that contradict the Nobel Committee’s values.
Ms Machado reportedly:

Spoke at the Patriots of Europe conference alongside far-right figures including Geert Wilders, Marie Le Pen, and Viktor Orbán.

Formed a political alliance between her party, Vente Venezuela, and Israel’s Likud Party — whose leaders face war-crime allegations at the International Criminal Court.

Declared that “the struggle of Venezuela is the struggle of Israel,” and supported moving Venezuela’s embassy to Jerusalem.

According to Reuters, participants at the conference called for a “new Reconquista,” invoking medieval wars against Muslims in Spain.

These public stances, the organisations said, undermine the credibility of the Nobel Committee and the moral authority of the Peace Prize itself.

What the Letter Calls For

The signatories urged the Nobel Committee to ask Ms Machado to:

Renounce her alliance with Israel’s Likud Party.

Apologise for joining a conference promoting fascism and anti-Muslim hate.

Retract her calls for war as a means to achieve democracy in Venezuela.

If she refuses, they say the Committee should rescind the award and instead recognise someone who truly upholds peace — such as activists, journalists, and medical professionals who risk their lives defending human rights worldwide.

United Global Voices

The letter was co-signed by major Muslim and human rights organisations from across the Western world, including:

Australian Muslim Advocacy Network (AMAN)

Canadians United Against Hate

Collective Against Islamophobia in Europe (CCIE)

Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)

Forum of European Muslim Youth and Student Organisations (FEMYSO)

Islamophobia Studies Center

Muslim Council of Britain (MCB)

The March 15th Forum – Combating Islamophobia

US Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO)

Together, they represent millions of people who believe that peace prizes should celebrate courage, not hypocrisy.

Plea for Accountability

AMAN stands with its international partners in urging the Nobel Committee to uphold the integrity of one of the world’s most respected awards.

By ensuring that the Nobel Peace Prize reflects the true meaning of peace, justice, and equality, the Committee can restore faith in its mission.

In recent months, more academics, healthcare workers, and professionals across Australia are finding themselves under scrutiny for one thing: speaking up for human rights—especially in support of Palestine.

But here’s the truth every professional should know:

Human rights advocacy is lawful in Australia.

Speaking out against injustice, supporting oppressed communities, or calling for accountability under international law is not only a moral duty—it’s a legally protected right.

Yet, many complaints made against professionals are not rooted in law. They are intimidation tactics meant to silence your voice.

That’s why AMAN has created a factsheet specifically for you—to guide you through how to respond to such complaints safely, confidently, and within your rights.

Click here to read the full AMAN factsheet

Who Is This For?

University lecturers, researchers, and students

Doctors, nurses, psychologists, and health sector professionals

Social workers, educators, and counsellors

Anyone facing workplace pressure for their human rights advocacy

What Should You Do if a Complaint Is Made?

Stay Calm

Advocacy for human rights—including the rights of Palestinians—is not racial vilification. It’s legal and protected under Australian and international law.

Request Full Information
Ask your employer or institution:

Review and Respond Thoughtfully

Use AMAN’s guide to assess whether your speech breaches any policies.

Know that criticism of a state, military, or ideology is not the same as targeting people based on race or religion.

Seek Expert Help

Contact your union or a workplace lawyer.

Reach out to the Islamophobia Register Australia.

Document everything.

Know Your Legal Protections

Political Belief Is Protected
In VIC, ACT, QLD, and TAS, it’s unlawful to discriminate against someone based on political views.

Public Interest Expression Is Lawful
Criticism made in good faith and in the public interest is protected.

Defamation and Harassment Remedies Exist
If a complaint is made public and affects your reputation, or if it becomes drawn-out without basis, you may have legal recourse.

What If You’re in the Public Service or Health Sector?

Be aware of any workplace policies around public commentary and symbols.

Policies must be reasonable, consistent, and proportionate.

A recent report launched by the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network (APAN) and the Australian Muslim Advocacy Network (AMAN) sheds light on a disturbing pattern of racism and dehumanisation targeted at Palestinians and Muslims in Australia. Titled “Observations of Anti-Palestinian and Anti-Muslim Racism: November 2023 to March 2024,” this report unveils the weaponisation of antisemitism by pro-Israel groups to silence Palestinian voices and their allies. This crucial document calls for immediate action to address these alarming trends and uphold the dignity and rights of all individuals.

Download the Report

Media Release

Understanding the Report

The report meticulously documents instances of anti-Palestinian and anti-Muslim rhetoric shared within a significant Australian Zionist/pro-Israel Facebook group. It highlights a troubling pattern of hateful and dehumanising commentary directed at Palestinians, Muslims, and those who support them. This behavior is not isolated but rather reflects a top-down issue, with leadership figures, including the new Antisemitism Envoy, playing a significant role in perpetuating these narratives.

The Weaponisation of Antisemitism

One of the report’s most striking findings is the deliberate weaponisation of antisemitism by pro-Israel activists to suppress Palestinian voices. This tactic is part of a broader strategy to silence any expression of solidarity with Palestinians, both online and offline. The report underscores the need for policymakers and community leaders to recognise and challenge this manipulation, ensuring that all forms of racism are addressed without bias.

The Impact on Palestinian Rights

Anti-Palestinian racism, as defined in the report, is a specific form of anti-Arab racism that seeks to silence, exclude, and dehumanise Palestinians. This includes actions such as Nakba denial, justifying violence against Palestinians, dismissing their Indigenous rights, and defaming those who support them. The report serves as a stark reminder that this form of racism is not just a matter of prejudice but a systematic effort to erase Palestinian narratives and their rightful place in history.

It’s Time for Action

APAN and AMAN are urging policymakers, organisations, and individuals to take concrete steps to combat anti-Palestinian and anti-Muslim racism. Some of the key recommendations include promoting the equal worth and dignity of all people, challenging racism and dehumanisation, and creating safe spaces for discussions about the impact of words and actions within a human rights framework.

The “Observations of Anti-Palestinian and Anti-Muslim Racism” report is a critical wake-up call for all Australians. It challenges us to confront the uncomfortable truths about racism in our society and to take meaningful action to ensure that all people, regardless of their race, religion, or nationality, are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

On 17 May 2024, the Australian Muslim Advocacy Network (AMAN), along with numerous other organisations, issued a statement opposing the recent Senate motion that condemns the phrase “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free.” This condemnation is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the phrase, which has historically been associated with the Palestinian cause for self-determination and statehood.

The True Meaning of the Phrase

The phrase “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is deeply rooted in the aspiration for freedom and dignity for all individuals living within the lands stretching from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. It represents a vision for liberation and equality, regardless of background, faith, or nationality.

This vision is not a call for violence but peaceful coexistence and self-determination.

Misconceptions and Misuse

The recent Senate motion, spearheaded by Senator Birmingham, uses the words of Palestinians against them, implying that their calls for liberation are illegitimate. This motion not only distorts the meaning of the phrase but also silences the political and cultural expressions of Palestinians. Such actions detract from the actual issues at hand, including the ongoing genocide and humanitarian crises faced by Palestinians in Gaza.

Historical and Academic Perspectives

According to the University of Toronto’s Hearing Palestine Initiative, the phrase should be understood within the context of Palestinian history and culture. It is an expression of the Palestinian people’s collective memory and aspirations, not a political program advocating violence. This academic perspective underscores the importance of recognising the phrase as a call for liberation and equality in the face of colonisation and occupation.

The Impact of Reckless Language

The use of terms like “religiously motivated violent extremism” (RMVE) about Palestinian activism only serves to link terrorism with an entire religion, fostering fear and prejudice. This is not only inaccurate but also dangerous, as it fuels online hatred and increases the risk of hate incidents against the Muslim community. Public officials must use accurate language that reflects the political nature of terrorism rather than associating it with any religion.

AMAN’s Call to Action

AMAN, along with other supporting organisations, calls for an end to the reckless use of RMVE and urges a reconsideration of the Senate’s stance. It is imperative to focus on the real issues affecting Palestinians and to promote a narrative that supports liberation and human rights for all.

The Australian Muslim Advocacy Network (AMAN) welcomes the recent shift in Australia’s position on Palestine at the United Nations. This change is a testament to the Australian Government’s willingness to depart from the US block position, showcasing its capability to take independent steps towards justice and peace.

Read AMAN’s Palestine UN Vote Media Statement

A Significant Shift in Policy

The Labor Government’s strengthened message that recognition of Palestinian statehood should not be contingent on the conclusion of a peace process marks a pivotal shift. This stance, combined with the UN vote, is likely to be seen as hostile by Israel, but it underscores Labor’s readiness to speak necessary truths for the sake of peace and human rights in the region.

Standing Against War Crimes

AMAN also acknowledges Labor’s decision to distance itself from the US stance on the International Criminal Court’s jurisdiction over war crimes. Although Labor has not fully affirmed the court’s jurisdiction or retracted the previous government’s objections, this move is a step in the right direction. It signals a cautious but meaningful divergence from outright rejection of international legal oversight.

The Urgent Call for Action

Despite these positive developments, AMAN stresses that the changes are overdue and insufficient given the severity of Israel’s actions. Labor has the potential to make a significant impact by immediately halting Australia’s critical role in the global military supply chain to Israel and its key suppliers.

AMAN urges the Australian Government to unequivocally withdraw from this supply chain. Additionally, AMAN calls for the incorporation of safeguards within the Future Made in Australia Act to prevent the local manufacturing of weapons destined for countries accused of serious crimes under international law.

The 2018 Defence Export Strategy

Australia’s 2018 Defence Export Strategy aims to elevate the nation’s defence industry to a top ten global exporter by 2028, identifying Israel as a key market. Increasing local manufacturing has been a core strategy, with Australia recently becoming the largest US weapons manufacturer outside the United States.

In the past seven months, major deals have been announced between Australian Defence Ministers and Israeli weapons companies. Australia is exporting significant munitions stocks to Germany to meet Israel’s demand. This deep involvement in the global arms supply chain necessitates a reevaluation of Australia’s role and responsibilities.

Upholding Human Rights and Justice

AMAN’s advocacy is rooted in the principles of justice and human rights. The organisation calls for a reassessment of Australia’s defence policies to ensure they align with these values. By withdrawing from the military supply chain linked to Israel and reinforcing safeguards in defence manufacturing, Australia can take a stand against the perpetuation of violence and support a more peaceful and just international community.

For further details and to support AMAN’s advocacy efforts, please visit our website or contact us directly. Together, we can work towards a future where all human rights and justice are upheld.

The Australian Muslim Advocacy Network (AMAN) has recently issued a comprehensive briefing note addressing serious concerns regarding the counterterrorism policing events in Sydney. This note underscores inconsistencies in policing standards and highlights the urgent need for fair and humane treatment of individuals, particularly those with mental illness or disabilities.

Read Our Full Briefing Note

Inconsistent Policing Standards

One of the core issues raised by AMAN is the stark difference in how the New South Wales (NSW) police handle cases involving mental illness. For example, in the Botany petrol bomb incident, the police did not involve the counterterrorism unit despite clear indications of a politically motivated attack. Contrarily, in the Wakely stabbing incident, police quickly designated the event as terrorism without a comprehensive mental health assessment of the attacker.

This inconsistent approach is particularly troubling when considering the severe penalties associated with terrorism charges, which can include life imprisonment. AMAN’s briefing note points out that the terrorist act charges have only been used once in Australian history in relation to a non-Muslim person and never for a non-Muslim minor.

The Impact of Mental Illness on Policing Decisions

The briefing note also delves into how mental illness is treated differently depending on the individual’s background. In several cases involving non-Muslim individuals with mental health issues, the charges were often less severe and included considerations for their mental health. Conversely, Muslim individuals with similar or even more severe mental health issues faced harsh terrorism charges.

For instance, the Bondi incident involving a white adult male with schizophrenia was quickly ruled out as terrorism, whereas the Wakely incident involving a 16-year-old Arab Muslim boy with a history of mental health concerns was promptly classified as terrorism.

The Call for Fair Treatment and Accountability

AMAN calls for a principled and consistent approach to counterterrorism policing, emphasizing the need for fairness in the investigation process, labelling, and charges laid. The organisation argues that mental health and young age should be significant factors in determining the appropriate legal response and punishment, rather than defaulting to severe terrorism charges.

Broader Implications for the Muslim Community

The briefing note highlights how the current approach by the NSW police and the broader Australian legal system can exacerbate feelings of alienation and discrimination within the Muslim community. By disproportionately targeting Muslims with terrorism charges and overlooking similar actions by non-Muslims, the system undermines trust and increases the sense of injustice among Australian Muslims.

AMAN’s Recommendations

AMAN recommends several measures to address these issues:

Review and Reform Policing Standards: Establish clear and consistent guidelines for when and how terrorism charges should be applied, ensuring mental health assessments are integral to the decision-making process.

Protect Human Rights: Ensure that counterterrorism measures respect the human rights of all individuals, particularly vulnerable groups such as those with mental health issues or disabilities.

Community Engagement: Foster better relationships between the police and the Muslim community to build trust and cooperation.

Education and Training: Provide comprehensive training for police officers on cultural sensitivity and the appropriate handling of cases involving mental health issues.

The recent counterterrorism policing events in Sydney reveal critical flaws in how such cases are handled, particularly concerning individuals with mental health issues. AMAN’s detailed briefing note calls for urgent reforms to ensure fair and humane treatment for all, highlighting the need for consistency, transparency, and respect for human rights.
For Immediate Release:

24 April 2024

The Australian Muslim Advocacy Network (AMAN) urgently calls for the cessation of the term “religiously motivated violent extremism” (RMVE) in counterterrorism discourse. This label has repeatedly fueled online hatred and, based on historical patterns, will likely escalate hate incidents against the Muslim community.

Download the Statement

The Problem with RMVE

Terrorism, fundamentally, is politically motivated. The use of RMVE misdirects public focus from political motives to an entire religion, fostering unwarranted panic and fear. This term unfairly associates violent acts with the Muslim faith, rather than addressing the political ideologies that drive such extremism.

White supremacist or Incel-inspired terrorism is often categorized as “ideologically motivated.” However, when the offender is Muslim, RMVE unjustly implicates a whole religion and its followers. This double standard not only stigmatizes the Muslim community but also glamorises violent acts as religiously sanctioned, inadvertently supporting the narratives of politically motivated groups like ISIS.

The Consequences of RMVE Language

The reckless use of RMVE language by public officials contributes to the spread of dehumanizing conspiracy theories online, increasing the risk of hate crimes similar to the Christchurch massacre. Such terminology emboldens racist groups, escalating threats against Muslims and perpetuating fear and division.

Recent Examples of Double Standards

Recent events in Sydney starkly illustrate the inconsistent application of terrorism designations. The Bondi attacker, known to police for mental health issues, was quickly ruled out as a terrorist. In contrast, the Wakely attacker, also with mental health concerns, was swiftly labeled as a terrorist. This disparity highlights a prejudicial approach that disproportionately impacts young Muslims, who face severe biases when tried before the courts.

Criticism of ASIO and AFP

ASIO Director Mike Burgess, who often warns against inflammatory language, ironically employed terms like “religiously motivated” and “Sunni violent extremism” in a National Press Club address. Such language misrepresents the Muslim world, linking a vast and diverse community to terrorism. This not only disrespects Muslims but also misleads the public about the true causes of terrorism, endangering and marginalizing an entire community.

AMAN’s Call to Action

AMAN emphatically states that the use of RMVE is both reckless and irresponsible. We demand an immediate end to this terminology in counterterrorism contexts. The focus should shift to accurately describing terrorism as politically motivated, thus preventing the undue vilification of the Muslim faith and its adherents.

The NSW Police Commissioner’s rushed and biased designations lead to severe prejudice against young individuals facing trial. It’s imperative that counterterrorism efforts are fair, consistent, and free from religious bias.

Together, we can promote a just and unbiased approach to counterterrorism that respects the rights and dignity of all communities.
